Craving a trip to Vegas? Sure, you might be. But your bank account will have none of it. After going through everything and building a budget, you suddenly realize that you have just enough money to gamble at the low-stakes tables and slots, assuming you eat cereal bars for breakfast. And possibly lunch. And dinner.
Doesn’t sound like much of a high-roller’s trip does it? But that doesn’t have to be the case. Today, we’re revealing the secrets smart people use to look like a high roller on a low roller’s budget.
Some of these tips are tried and true methods while others are ones you’ll need to try for yourself to see if they work. But they all add up to big savings and the ultimate high roller’s experience on a budget.
Trick the pit boss into thinking you’re rich
For this trick, you’ll need to commit a nice chunk of change, although you don’t necessarily have to spend it. It starts when you sit down at a table with about $5,000 to $10,000. When that kind of money hits the felt, the pit boss will be called overt immediately to make sure that the changeover from bills to chips happens flawlessly. But that’s not all they’ll do. They’ll also ask you for your players card.
At this point, it’s in your best interest not to have one. Instead, have them sign you up for one. They’ll take your license and do everything for you while you play. As the pit boss walks away, you can bet the minimum instead of all your money. This works best at a $5 table where you don’t have to commit so much money.
In many instances, the pit boss will return with your card and offer to comp a free room or a nice dinner, assuming that you’re a high roller with that kind of cash. Even though you might have sat down with $5,000 or $10,000, you might only commit to playing $100.
Take advantage of reverse happy hour
If you want to eat like a king on a peasant’s budget, consider altering your dinner time. Many Las Vegas restaurants have what’s called a Reverse Happy Hour. This is often at 10pm or 11pm and food and drinks run as low as $3. The Reverse Happy Hour is designed for Vegas performers who have ended their day and are starving, though the prices are open to everyone. If you’re trying to impress a date, this is the way to go.
Use UberSelect or UberBLACK
You want to ride around in a taxi? Then you’re going to look like an everyday Joe. But if you want the appearance of being a big shot, consider taking an Uber. And not just any Uber. Choose UberSelect and you’ll be driven around in a luxury sedan with leather interior. We’re talking BMW, Audi, and Mercedes type cars, not your everyday Hyundai Sonata.
Everything happens on your iPhone or Android, so there’s no calling or waiting around for a taxi. What’s more, Uber tends to be a lot cheaper than taxis. In some cases, UberSelect can work out to the same price as a cab, so you’re not spending a whole bunch of extra money.
Get insider hotel rates
If you’re not interested in our comped room trick (the one that requires $5k or $10k), you can still score a sweet room for a tiny price. Instead of booking your room through a regular site like Hotels.com, sign up for a casino rewards program and get access to exclusive prices. You could end up saving $40 or $50 a night, which adds up to significant savings.
Slip the check-in guy $100
We get it. $100 is a lot of money. But if you want to look like a high roller, a small $100 investment can go a long way. When you book your hotel room, consider booking the cheapest room. Then, when you go to check in, hand the registration desk $100 with your ID. This will signal to them that you want an upgrade. Chances are, they’ll hand you one. Depending on who you get, you could end up enjoying a higher room category, views that impress, and lots more luxury.
Ask for free stuff
Believe it or not, sometimes you can get free stuff in Vegas just by asking. If you’ve been playing at the tables, ask the pit boss if he has any free show tickets. If he says no or ignores you, scoop up your chips and walk away. If he does have tickets but didn’t want to give them to you, chances are he’ll change his tune.
This trick also works well at the front desk. If you’re reading this and you’ve already checked into your hotel, ask the front desk if they have any free show tickets or restaurant comps. If they say no, tell them you’re checking out. Again, assuming you haven’t prepaid for your hotel and you still have days left on your stay, they’ll find something to give you.
Choose your casino wisely
Playing $50 a hand Blackjack at the Bellagio won’t get you noticed, but doing the same at a casino like O’Sheas and you might start to get comped, big time. The Irish casino/pub is built for young people on a limited budget, so if you’re dropping down big coin, you may end up being treated like royalty. Remember, in Las Vegas, you have lots of options when it comes to where to gamble, so feel free to roam the strip and find a place that works for you.
