Casino Etiquette: 5 Tips to Do It Right

By on

There is an old adage that suggests that you should “act like you’ve been there before.” Nowhere is that more evident than in a casino. Learning casino etiquette is crucial if you ever have any designs at earning a living off wagering in casinos.

1. The first thing to realize is that gambling is a zero sum game. This means that for ever wager there is a winner and a loser. Just because your bet is with the house, or the casino, does not mean it is a victimless crime. Someone else probably has the other side of the equation. Take a football game for example; the crowd in the sportsbook is probably split evenly. Why is this important? Well, when people have lost large sums of money, there is no reason to add to their misery.

In general, it is much better to be gracious in victory.

2. In line with the first point, don’t personify your losses by taking out your anger on someone who won. The point is that when you are dealing with money, don’t let your emotions either take you too far high or too far low; it is not how to behave at a casino. It is always best to moot your enthusiasm and take your wins and losses in stride.

3. Another aspect of casino etiquette is tipping. Many goods and services are provided at little or no cost to the player because the casino anticipates making money off of your wagering. The wait staff and dealers make a large portion of their earnings on tipping though. It is generally expected that you should tip for all drinks. In addition, tipping the dealer when a large pot is won in poker is customary. Even tipping the slot machine attendant can be appropriate. Tipping the door man, bell hops, or hosts and hostesses are also common place.

4. Dressing is an important thing to consider when it comes to casino etiquette. No one in the baccarat room wants to sit next to the guy in flip flops and a hoodie. If you are going to play higher stake games, it is probably a good idea to dress the part. The same applies in reverse. No need to wear a tuxedo if you plan on playing nickel slots, you will simply look ridiculous. A good idea is to match your attire to your stakes. If you plan on playing high stakes, dress like James Bond, if you plan on playing penny slots, dress like you are in the dorm room.

5. When considering how to behave at a casino, the rule of thumb should be to act classy. Don’t get overly emotional with wins or losses, don’t be cheap, and dress appropriately. A night out at a casino can be a great way to spend an evening, but there are many different personalities out there, which can lead to unwanted conflicts and confrontations.
